Picking a Pet for You !! You can choose your friends, but you can't choose your family — except, of course, for the family dog or cat. Since the first arranged dog breeding, humans have been gradually creating the most diverse species in the world: Canis familiaris, the domestic dog. Diversity in dogs existed even in prehistoric times, with distinct types of families, or "breeds," arising among their wolf ancestors 3,000 to 4,000 years ago. Animal Planet's dog breed directory is designed to inform you about some of these different breeds, but also to provide information that will help you choose the best dog for you. Check out your own dog's illustrious history, or browse around for the perfect canine pal. Click here to check out their directory. Below are some other links to make sure you choose the right animal to fit your lifestyle. Metro Animal Rescue Adoption Center- Metro Animal has compiled this list to inform people, particularly in the St. Louis metro area, about the vast array of companion animal services available. Although we are familiar with many of the groups listed, we do not have experience with every one. It is up to you to determine if an organization or service will fit your particular needs. For example, while most rescue/foster groups are no-kill (limited admission) organizations, you should not assume this if you plan to relinquish an animal. (A few are not.)
